Paralympian Visit
June 27th, 2023
On Monday 26th June we had David Hill, a paralympian swimmer and tri-athlete visit us at SMC. Everyone took part in a fitness challenge raising money for Sports for Schools and for our own school PE equipment. We then had the opportunity to hear about David’s career, training and acheivements – what an inspiration – I think we have a few budding athletes that would like to follow David’s path to take part in the olympics.

Fire Service Visit
May 3rd, 2023
We recently welcomed Kerri, one of our local fire fighters, to school to speak to children in years 2-6 about fire safety, the role of the fire service, what to do in an emergency, preventative steps to take at home, escape plans, smoke detectors, how to stop, drop and roll and so much more. The children were extremely knowledgable about potential hazards and what to do in an emergency. We also learnt about the many different roles of the fire service and how to become a fire fighter too. Thank you Kerri.

British Science Week
April 11th, 2023
British Science Week is a celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), and the theme this year was – connections! During this week each class spent an afternoon participating in a science, technology or engineering themed challenge, this was ‘connected’ to the work of a key scientist and we later shared our investgiations and findings at a whole school assembly.
Starfish Class learnt about the scientist Stephanie Kwolek who invented Kevlar in 1965 and had an investigation linked to Stephanie’s work as a materials scientist and connected to their previous learning on materials – they had to build the best egg-protector out of a range of different materials with the aim of protecting the egg from a falling object!
Dolphin Class learnt about the scientists/inventors Leonardo da Vinci and Igor Sikorsky. Although Leonardo da Vinci is most famously known for his paintings he was also a great inventor and the children discovered how he was connected to Igor Sikorsky who invented and made the first helicopter. Igor used some of Leonardo’s early investigations and plans into flight as his starting point! The children then made their own roto-copters and investigated how to make their copters fall faster.
Sharks Class learnt about the engineers Isambard Kingdom Brunel & Emily Roebling who are connected through the building of bridges; learning about Emily’s ground breaking work as the first female field engineer overseeing the building of the Brooklyn bridge and Isambard’s links to us in the South West as one of the most influential British figures in the industrial revolution. The children then had to build their own bridges to span a set distance and hold a 50g weight.
All children demonstrated fabulous scientific knowledge and working scientifically skills throughout their investigations – well done super scientists!

World Book Day
March 3rd, 2023
Here at SMC we had a fabulous time celebrating World Book Day. We dressed up as our favourite book characters, shared stories with our book buddies and took part in book themed activities. Our librarians held a snuggly stories event at lunchtime in the library, we had a masked reader competition in assembly and many of us came back for bedtime stories in our pyjamas.
We love reading!

Christmas Shoebox Appeal
November 14th, 2022
Our GIFT team led the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal following a visit from Mrs Williams. They decided to ask each class to bring in certain items to donate towards the shoeboxes and then spent their lunchtime packing the boxes ready for collection.
A huge thank you to everyone who donated items and filled shoeboxes, they certainly will make a difference to some children’s lives this Christmas.
